PLATE REVERBERATION AMPLIFIER

Planes models a vintage plate reverberator with the same care and attention given to acoustic spaces in Chambers. Plates have been a favorite tool for recording engineers since their origin in the 1950s, and some of the very earliest digital audio processors were attempts to simulate their sound. We are going into our 50th year of digital plates in 2026!

Planes offers resonating bodies in three sizes. The SMALL plate is fast and splashy, perfect for snares and aggressive guitars. The LARGE plate is deeper and slower, adding lushness and width to vocals and ambient material. The medium size blends qualities of both. All settings are equally at home in a studio setting enhancing your mixes, or emanating loudly from a mono guitar cab. You will find uses for the P2 in your amps’ effect loop, in front of the preamp, or even before overdrive pedals for those murky and doomy workouts.

The TIME control adjusts the overall reverberation time in a way that is faithful to the original models. The midrange RT60 (at 500 Hz) ranges from 1 up to 4 seconds. At low TIME settings, the low end is relatively controlled. At high settings the low end blooms and becomes seemingly endless, while the high end fades more quickly. This shape is true to the way that steel plates behaved with their physical dampening systems of felts, levers and hand cranks.

The TONE and DRIVE controls affect the tonality of the sound being fed into the plate. The P2 incorporates a detailed model of the electronics typical of 1970s units, including the line transformers and transistor gain stages which make up the amplifier. This warm, slightly driven character is a huge part of why we love vintage plates. The P2 goes a step further when the preamp is driven to extremes, adding some flattering volume, compression and grit to the signal. For a more pristine sound, don’t be afraid to leave the DRIVE at 0. The TONE knob adjusts a set of high and low pass filters which further sculpt the plate’s resonant spectrum. High DRIVE settings can be moderated by turning the BLEND control low, analogous to how volume and gain are interactive in most distortion pedals.

Three BLEND modes customize Planes to your playing style. It can be configured for analog dry through, analog dry through with tails or a digital blend which can be set fully wet. Planes is buffered-bypass, with the same high-headroom, whisper-quiet analog section as the C2. Planes has stereo inputs and outputs, on separate jacks, and can be operated in mono, MISO or true stereo modes.

The first batch of P2’s ships with a vintage-styled (and incredibly durable) anodized aluminum faceplate with paint filled legends.

There’s not much more to say about Planes. If you crave plates that sound like crashing sheets of metal instead of a struggling computer from the 1970s, I think you’ll love it.
